Musical about escaping slavery raises consciousness, inspires conversation and action

20 August 2018

EDINBURGH, Scotland — Determined to break free from the shackles of slavery, Henry Brown undertook a dangerous journey. The year was 1849, and he was one of the 3 million enslaved people living in the United States. He shipped himself in a wooden crate from a plantation in the southern state of Virginia to the northern city of Philadelphia. Slavery was already outlawed there, and a group of abolitionists received him, helping secure his liberation.

History would remember him as Henry “Box” Brown.

The Birth of the Bab

This October marks the bicentenary of the birth of The Báb – a figure in the history of the Baha’i Faith whose message inaugurated a new stage in the development of mankind: a time of transformation marking humanity’s passage toward maturity. Playing a part in advancing
civilization is the spiritual heritage of every believer in the Cause of God.

To celebrate this special time, the Baha'is of Philomath invite you to participate in two gatherings. (Yes! You can attend either one, or both!)

President Jimmy Carter Offers Wishes on Baha'u'llah's Bicentary

President Carter wrote to the American Bahá’í Community, offering his and Mrs. Carter's best wishes on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the birth of Bahá’u’lláh.

In his letter, he said, "As many of our people struggle with persistent systemic injustice against African Americans and Indigenous Nations, chronic violence against women, religious conflict, and endless war, the centrality of peace, human equality and religious unity found in the Bahá’í  writings and activities can serve as an inspiration to those of all faiths and creeds."

African leaders tackle environmental goals

Gabon rainforest

LIBREVILLE, Gabon — When addressing  issues of climate change, we need to adopt a holistic perspective, said the Baha’i International Community at a recent meeting on the environment that convened leaders in Africa.

“We have to look at the spiritual and material dimensions. How do we live with nature harmoniously?” asked Solomon Belay, Representative of the BIC Office in Addis Ababa. “We need a coherent view of environmental issues and a plan based on that.”

Oh, God, Show Me a Sign!

by Kathy Roman

When I was a little girl, feeling lost or confused, I would talk to God and ask for a sign to show me everything was going to be okay.

As I got older, I put that silliness away for the most part. But superstitions aside, I do still believe that God can speak to us through signs that are meaningful to us. Synchronicities and coincidences at just the right time can support and confirm us. But what about asking for signs like I did as a child? Two unique circumstances taught me valuable lessons.

Why Are We Here? Ask a Cow.

Everyone who has ever lived has asked themselves this fundamental question: why are we here?

In arguing that science refutes God, physicist and atheist Lawrence Krauss suggests that there is no answer to the question of why we are here, and that even asking the question is wrong-headed. To recap his proposition:

… human beings are also inevitably programmed to ask, “Why?” as we’ve heard it. But the “Why?” question is ill-posed, because it presumes purpose.… What if there is no purpose?

Gender Equality: Not Just a Women’s Issue, but a Human Issue | Justine Finn

Justine Finn—the founder and director of Relation-Shift, which works to address gender and sexual violence against middle- and high-school aged youth—talks about addressing and recognizing destructive gender biases in the real world. Even now, rigid gender roles hold back women—but they also hold back men. So how do we get to gender equality? The Baha’i teachings say that “The world of humanity is possessed of two wings, the male and the female. So long as these two wings are not equivalent in strength, the bird will not fly.” If we celebrate our shared humanity, we can fly.

the Baha'i World News Service: All Populations Have Capacity

... and tapping into that capacity must take precedence in development activities.

UNITED NATIONS — International aid agencies must view the populations they work with as protagonists of their own advancement. This message formed part of the opening address of a representative of the Baha'i International Community (BIC) at a recent conference on social development at the United Nations.

The idea that all populations have the capacity to contribute to their own development was one of the central themes of a statement shared by the BIC at the UN Commission.
